
"Fillings" (restorations) are intended to fix cavities, fractures, or failing restorations.
Your dentist will recommend a restoration (“filling”) if you have decay ("cavity") that extends past the enamel, a fracture, or an existing filling that’s starting to fail. These things aren't always painful, and it is dangerous to wait until you feel discomfort or sensitivity because that will mean that the pulp — the tooth's internal nerve — is already affected.
