Orthodontic treatment—whether via clear aligners or wires—moves the teeth within the bones of the jaw, and this process can be uncomfortable.

Orthodontic treatment—whether through clear aligners or brackets and wires—moves the teeth within the jaw, and this process can definitely be uncomfortable. While Invisalign isn’t typically painful, it is normal for patients to experience soreness, especially when the first set of trays are placed, or after changing trays. Soreness that makes speaking or eating uncomfortable should be discussed with your dentist right away. The teeth and gums tend to get more sensitive during treatment, but sensitivity that becomes chronic or painful will need attention from your provider.

Painful symptoms in your jaw (temporomandibular joints or TMJs), cheeks, or sinuses are very rare, as are allergic reactions to the acrylic or composite attachments, but let your dentist know right away if you experience pain, redness, or unusual discomfort. Trust your intuition; If something feels off, a consultation is never a bad idea.

In addition to wearing your trays as often as you can, keeping yourself hydrated and well-rested will help your treatment progress smoothly.

The best treatment for normal, occasional soreness is over-the-counter NSAIDS, like Advil or Ibuprofen. If you can’t take these medications, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is another great option. If you find yourself using these medications frequently, talk to your doctor.
